ASoN Meeting – January

* The end of an era ? “

Although kicking off a new year, Sunday January 29th  was also our last meeting at Haberfield, due to the fact that the premises will no longer be available for hire. Apparently Council, who own the building, have other plans.

The meeting focused on a collection of classic vintage audio equipment, kindly provided by Elson Silva.

Source was a Studer Revox CS270 (semi) professional reel-to-reel tape machine (drool! They just don’t make them like this any more! Or am I just showing my age…)

And a Panasonic Technics M235 cassette tape machine – one of the best of its era – equipped with 3 types of noise (tape hiss) reduction – dbx, Dolby B (typical domestic) and Dolby C (semi-pro).

Both of the above were 1980’s vintage.

Amplification was the famous Fisher brand X-101-D, circa 1963, valve based tetrode class A-B; and the also highly regarded JB Lansing (of loudspeaker fame) SA-600 transistor  amplifier (circa 1968), featuring triple darlington output transistors – new for the time.

Speakers were the legendary KEF Concertos, with their famous B139 oval woofer, B110 midrange and T27 tweeter; however, the mids had been damaged and subsequently replaced with Peerless brand units.

We also tried the club’s KEF Q900’s.

As the next meeting on Sunday 5th of February will be our first at the Epping Creative Centre, it was decided that we would again feature the same gear, providing a unique opportunity to compare the acoustics of the two venues.

Thus I am keeping the music list and impressions for the next newsletter, in order to present this comparison.
